Indian Cinema in Colombia
 
India participated as the Country Invitee of Honour in the XXVI Festival of Cine of Bogota 1-9 October 2009.

The Indian Film industry which is renowned as the largest producer of feature films in the world – producing more films in 2008 than US, China and Japan together – has held tremendous attraction for Colombian audiences for some time.  Films such as Lagaan, Monsoon Wedding, Slumdog Millionaire, etc. have been screened with tremendous success in the past.

The Film Festival provided an exceptional forum to stage the best of Indian Cinema.  The Embassy of India in Colmbia, in collaboration with the Directorate of Film Festivals of India, under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, coordinated the transportation of 8 Feature Films which participated in the Festival.

The prominent and highly successful film of Aamir Khan – Taare Zamin Par was the attraction on the opening night 1 October at which Mayor of Bogota, Samuel Moreno, the Ambassador of India Shri Deepak Bhojwani and Colombian Senator Jairo Clopatofsky performed the honours with speeches and a decoration of the Director of the Bogota Film Festival Dr. Henry Laguado.

India also contributed the highly successful feature film ´Jodha Akbar´of Director Ashutosh Gowarikar.  In addition, there was a retrospective of six films of the famous Indian Director, Shyam Benegal, including the renowned and significant film ´Making of the Mahatma´which was shown on 2 October, Gandhi Jayanti (Gandhi´s birthday).
