In April 2010, a Special Mission from the Foreign Ministry of Costa Rica visited New Delhi, the capital of India, headed by Minister-Counsellor Antonio Alarcon, a senior career diplomat, who met with officials in the Ministry of External Affairs in Delhi and took the necessary administrative and legal steps to open the Embassy of Costa Rica in India.

The Central American nation, considered highly progressive for its pacific and environmental orientation, had been considering opening an Embassy in India for some time and finally has realized its goal.  The Government of India formally welcomed the opening of the Embassy, which will enable more direct contacts between the two countries and their Governments.  The Embassy of India in Bogota, Colombia, is concurrently accredited to Costa Rica.

Costa Rica and India enjoy a warm and friendly  relationship with trade between the two countries growing  (during the calendar year 2009 US$ 76 million)   and Indian and Costa Rican companies collaborating in automobiles, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and information technology.  There has also been interest in Indian culture and several Costa Ricans have availed technical scholarships to train in Indian institutions.
