The Minister of Health of Ecuador, Dr. David Chiriboga, in a ceremony on 3 June 2010 thanked the Government of India for the donation of US$800,000 worth of medicines to Ecuador.
The medicines are in the process of arriving in Ecuador, being despatched by three well known Indian pharmaceutical companies – CIPLA Limited, IPCA Laboratories and Aurobindo Pharma.
All the medicines – mainly anti-retroviral; antibacterial; anti-malarial and anti-H1N1 flu – have been supplied as per the requirements of the Government of the Republic of Ecuador.
This donation completes the commitment of the Government of India to supply US$1 million of generic medicines to help the needy segments of Ecuador´s population from the public health service. Earlier consignments worth US$200,000 were handed over to the Government of Ecuador in 2008.
Minister Chiriboga also recognized India´s competence and dedication in manufacturing generic medicines at low cost and good quality. Some Indian pharmaceutical companies are already distributing medicines commercially in Ecuador.
